How Strong Messaging Can Deliver (or Prevent) the Results You Want

You’re sending out email campaigns but not getting any responses.

You’re paying for social media ads but not seeing an increase in event sign-ups.

You’re constantly updating your website but not getting the qualified leads you want.

Giving your 100% but not seeing the payoff is one of the most frustrating parts of marketing, no matter how long you’ve been doing it.

But, in the years I’ve worked with nonprofits, I’ve often found the same culprit to be responsible for the disconnect between efforts and results:

Messaging.

Why messaging might be causing your disconnect

The reality of marketing is that anybody can do the basics.

Anyone can send an email, post on social media, or create a website… but not everyone can do that with clear, consistent messaging that’s part of a bigger strategy.

That is where the disconnect happens.

If your wording is totally different between emails and social media posts, it leaves your audience confused about what you’re trying to tell them.

If you use different calls to action while promoting the same event (or if you have too many), your audience doesn’t know what you want them to do.

A confused audience can’t give you the results your nonprofit wants (and deserves!) to see — which means it’s time to unify what you’re asking your audience, and how you’re asking them to do it.

How to clarify your messaging for stronger results

Before you launch your next multi-platform campaign, ask yourself two questions:

  1. Is the message I’m sharing consistent across all platforms?
  2. Does the message fit within our nonprofit’s bigger marketing strategy?

If you can answer yes to both questions, then you can launch the campaign with confidence that your messaging is aligned.

If you can only answer yes to one of the questions, take a second to recalibrate before you hit “send.”

What adjustments can you make to get the messaging more on track? Does your content accurately reflect why this message matters to your audience?

Does your call to action send people to the right place (and is there only one of them)?

Make adjustments until both answers get a confident yes, because aligned messaging is the difference between efforts and real results.

Next steps:

  • Create a plan with messaging, graphics, and timing before you start on your next campaign, so you have guidelines on what to say and how to say it
  • Check that your website is clear and has one call to action that you can reference in your ads and promotions. Less confusion = better results.

And, if you’re feeling stuck…

I help nonprofits better understand what they need from their messaging.

Together, we create content that not only fits within your larger marketing strategy but also really resonates with your audience, so it’s easy for your supporters to see why their contribution matters.

Whether you work with me or manage your marketing on your own, remember:

Every message you send needs to be part of a bigger strategy to work. Focus on content that works together to deliver consistent, meaningful messaging — because that’s how you truly connect with your audience.

See you in two weeks!

Why Sharing Social Media Tasks Isn't as Helpful As You Think In the nonprofit world, it’s not uncommon to see multiple people sharing social media marketing responsibilities. Staff and volunteers split up what needs to be done for social, with different people taking on different tasks on different days. Now, for nonprofit professionals wearing multiple hats, spreading out social media tasks can be a huge help — especially if you’re already juggling a million daily tasks. But does sharing the...
